Project management is quality management
For Lauren project engineer Nestor Ortiz, successful project management is about more than keeping schedules and tasks on time and on budget, it’s about ensuring the overall quality of every deliverable. And that attention to quality, he believes, is what sets Lauren Services apart.
“The philosophy at Lauren is that the project manager is responsible for the whole process,” he says. “I think a project manager is a person who is better equipped for understanding quality management. Project management is at the core of having a quality management system.”
Nestor works out of Lauren’s Calgary office, where he says a good day involves plenty of opportunities to collaborate and communicate with his colleagues across various disciplines. The company successfully navigated and even grew through the pandemic thanks to a culture of genuine support among colleagues.
“The work environment is fantastic here. They value your opinion, and you feel like you’re giving added value to the work,” says Nestor, who grew up and received his education in Colombia.
Moving to Canada and finding work was challenging, he says, but the effort was worth the reward.
“I had been looking for work in the engineering field for a while and Lauren gave me the opportunity, and I’m very thankful for that.”
He says his family is happy living and working in Canada, but his kids do ask questions about the weather when they visit family in Colombia.
“Whenever we take our children to Colombia and they experience all this heat, they ask us why we moved to the snow. You need to explain it to them,” he says with a smile, ‘but we are very happy here.”
With offices in Calgary and Vancouver, Lauren Services delivers dynamic performance and intelligent design across the entire suite of engineering services.
